UNMISSABLE SHORT FILMS | The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore

Cinematic excellence doesn’t have to come in 90-minute slabs, so here I look at the very best short movies around. If you’ve got a little spare time, bang one of these beauties on – satisfaction guaranteed.

#1: The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore [2011]

First up is this much-celebrated work from last year, was directed by the clear dual virtuoso talents of William Joyce and Brandon Oldenburg. It went on to win the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film, and is just as moving as the Best Picture winner that year, The King’s Speech. Whimsical animation and a tale that will get you reaching immediately for your nearest book, this is a superb way to start off this new column. Enjoy.
